Is Unconscious Bias Holding You Back at Work? The Role of Looks and Height

Did you know that your height or appearance might be impacting your salary? And the worst part: it’s not even your fault!

Studies show that taller and more attractive people are more likely to earn higher salaries and hold leadership positions. A study by the University of Florida in 2004 revealed that, on average, taller individuals earn about 10% more than their shorter colleagues. And it doesn’t stop there: Harvard University, in 2016, found that physical appearance unconsciously influences decisions about promotions and salary increases.

But why does this happen? Without realizing it, our brain associates physical traits like height and beauty with qualities such as competence and leadership. It’s an unconscious bias, something that happens automatically, even if no one admits it.

So, how can you deal with this? Here are two simple steps:

Invest in your presence: Work on your posture, tone of voice, and confidence. Studies show that strong communication skills can overcome these biases.

Show results: Document your achievements and present concrete data about your performance. This helps shift the focus to what truly matters: your skills.
